A person’s body undergoes significant changes from pregnancy through childbirth in a very short amount of time, putting an extraordinary amount of strain on the abdominal and pelvic organs, muscles and ligaments, creating a host of issues.
Every person’s experience of pregnancy is unique and that’s why an individually tailored program according to the needs of each mom-to-be is a must. A pre-natal program can help them learn strategies to endure childbirth and quickly recover afterwards to take care of their newborn.
Some of these strategies range from perineal massage and breathing strategies to various movements and positions that could help with each stage of labor to reduce the effort and trauma associated with childbirth.
The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recommends pelvic physical therapy to everyone as soon as 3 weeks after childbirth. Pelvic physios can help with the scar-tissue management, pelvic floor muscle training, abdominal muscles training (with or without Diastasis Recti); prevention or treatment of pelvic organ prolapse, urinary/fecal leakage, constipation, pelvic girdle/back/hip pain and finally getting back to pre-pregnancy fitness levels.
