Pelvic floor muscles role in the sexual arousal, activity and the climax has been well documented in people with a vagina or a penis . The over or underactivity of these muscles can impair the sexual functioning with varying degrees. While overactivity can trigger pain, make insertion painful for people with vaginas and create pain with erection or ejaculation with people with penises.
The pudendal nerve can get impinged by these overactive pelvic floor muscles and become hypersensitive causing pain in vulva, vagina and clitoris making sexual activity difficult. This hyperactivity in the nerves can also create a persistent sense of arousal which is an extremely frustrating situation.
